UV Safe
In the warmer months (September to March for Victorian clubs), most people need to take steps to reduce the risk of skin cancer when outdoors. Sporting club coaches and officials can play a role in protecting members from harmful levels of UV exposure as part of their overall responsibility for member welfare. It’s simple, cost effective and makes good sense!
The SunSmart Campaign presented by Cancer Council Victoria provides information and useful resources to support good UV protection practices. Advertising has told us how to sun protect for years with the Slip! Slop! Slap! Seek! Slide! messages.
- Slip on sun protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible.
- Slop on SPF 30+ broad spectrum sunscreen liberally to dry skin, at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours when outdoors.
- Slap on a broad brimmed hat that shades your face, neck and ears.
- Seek shade
- Slide on sunglasses.
What can club officials do?
- Victorian clubs can let people know of the UV rating using the SunSmart UV Alert website. People do get confused about cloudy days and UV ratings
- Encourage your iphone users to download the Free SunSmart App for iPhone and Adroid
- Ensure that there is SPF 30+ sunscreen that is 'in date' available for everyone
- Establish as standard practice to make the the best use of existing shade, apply for a shade grant or try to acquire a sponsor to purchase portable shade
- Refer to the UV Exposure and Heat Illness Guide
